greekgirl:

The season started the second week of January, and the concert is May 15. That means roughly 14 weeks of rehearsal before we perform the Beethoven mass (one of his less popular works—though a masterpiece). It all starts here, with a score that presents a deceptively simple and cleanly designed cover. I’m always excited for that first rehearsal, when we receive the actual music. I should have photographed this one when it was super clean and crisp and just a pleasure to hold and behold and crack open and explore. “Edition Breitkopf” references Breitkopf & Hartel, the world’s oldest music publishing company, founded in Leipzig. “fur Soli, Chor und Orchester” — for soloists, choir, and orchestra. It was printed in Germany, where Ludwig himself was born (Bonn, December 16, 1770).

Thing is, when we cracked open the first few pages of this particular work, we encountered some pretty scary stuff. More on this later.
